The first chapter presents a succinct summary of the work of the painting restorer including restoration ethics, the importance of documentation, and an outline of the studio. The different materials used in painting are outlined: the support, ground, surface coatings, stretcher, and frames. Techniques of painting are then briefly described as they relate to the various media used. The chapter on repair and renovation covers the examination, damage assessment, repair, renovation, protection of paintings, and health hazards. The sections on damage assessment and repair follow the categories established in the second chapter on materials.
