Abstract
Samples of <i>Pinus sylvestris</i> were treated with one of three antisapstains -- Mitrol 48, Improsol 1 (ammonium and potassium hydrogen fluorides), and Tecto flytande (thiabendazole) -- or three wood preservatives -- Rentokil K33 (CCA), Cuprinol Tryck (copper and caprylic acid), and copper-querton (copper and benzalkonium chloride) -- and air-or kiln-dried. Dust and wood shavings, planed at two depths, were analyzed for active ingredients. Significantly higher concentrations of active ingredients were found in dust particles than in shavings. There was no significant difference between drying procedures in distribution of active ingredients. Susceptibility to attack by mold fungi was also investigated. Air drying reduced the efficacy of Mitrol, whereas kiln drying reduced the efficacy of Improsol and Tecto. Significantly better protection against molds was obtained for the wood preservatives by kiln drying. Treatment with CCA followed by drying by the Hagar K process (redrying in oil at 80°C, 80% vacuum for 8-12 hours) gave best results. -- AATA
