Abstract
This short text is a schematic presentation of the basic petrographic methods, with indications regarding how applicable they are to ceramics and what their limitations are in this field. When these methods (optical microscopy on thin sections with polarized light, x-ray diffraction) also include chemical analyses, they can provide answers to provenance problems, which are discussed. -- AATA
