Abstract
Five basic approaches to dimensional stabilization of wood are listed. Older approaches to conservation of waterlogged artifacts as well as modern conservation methods for total or partial bulking, removal of free water, internal or external coatings, reduction of natural hygroscopicity of wood, and chemical cross linking are described.
