Abstract
Marble samples taken from different parts of the Duomo have been first examined from the mineralogical-petrological point of view. Their structural and physical characteristics were determined. To complete the study, an investigation was conducted on the environmental conditions of the Milan Duomo. The final result shows that the degradation of candoglia marble depends mainly on its structural characteristics and secondarily on its physical properties. It undergoes both a physical and chemical decay.
