Abstract
The alveolar alteration is due to the presence of soluble and hygroscopic salts in the porous stone. They can exchange water vapour with air the more easily the faster are the air movements (turbulence). Analysis of deteriorated stones from French monuments and the results of the artificially induced alteration are reported.
