Abstract
Different alteration mechanisms are described as a function of environmental conditions. Transformations of the main minerals of igneous and metamorphic silicate rocks, of sandstones and of carbonate rocks are illustrated. A comparison of the alteration process rate in natural environments and in manmade structures is given.
