Recommends using poor specimens of coinage for experimental analysis in order to determine what happens to a coin during extensive burial, comparing like coins under different burial conditions. This methodology is illustrated with Claudian coin copies. The current policy generally followed is oriented to efficiency not preservation; coins, particularly those not in mint condition, should be available to the archaeologist to gain information; they do not belong to the curator.
