Abstract
This article describes the excavation of the wreck of the Batavia off the west Australian coast, and the conservation of the wreck and assorted relics. The history of the Batavia is included, as is a detailed description of salvage operations. The conservation, the cleaning and stabilization of objects against further deterioration, and the restoration, the repair of broken objects and also the replacement of missing pieces when necessary are also described in detail. Difficulties encountered in salvage and in conservation are also documented.
