Abstract
An art historical investigation of the history and technical significance of the so-called Damascus and Rhodian ceramics. The dramatic change in palette and style in the Isnik ceramics around 1550 reflects the different firing conditions that resulted from a conversion to a mass production ceramic industry. It is proposed that the Damascus ceramics (1525-1550) were reduction fired, and the mass produced Rhodian ceramics (1555-1675) were oxidation fired. -- AATA
