Scientific techniques have proved to be of essential importance for the identification of forgeries. If dating techniques can be used, if clear signs of the influence of weathering can be found, or if an object is composed of several materials, the detection of a forgery is not difficult. If an art object consists of only one very resistant material, such as ivory, some hardstones and gems, scientific techniques are less reliable. -- AATA
