A Cambridge Stereoscan Mk. 2A scanning electron microscope with a Kevex x-ray spectrometer system and a JEDL KXA 50A electron microprobe were used to study wood and artifacts from three shipwreck sites off the Newfoundland coast: <i>HMS Sapphire sunk by the French in Bay Bulls in 1696; the <i>Marguerite sunk in action with the British in 1707; an unidentified shipwreck at Trinity dated from the mid-1100's. The analyses of three metal artifacts from the <i>Sapphire, an unidentified object (part of a candlestick?), a small bell (dinner bell?) and a medical syringe are described. A copper seal dated 1738 from the Trinity site was studied. Wood samples from the same wreck were also examined by SEM. All were of white oak, well preserved and showed no obvious degradative changes. It is thought that the vessel was probably built of English oak <i>(Quercus robus L. ) and that it might be the <i>Speedwell sunk in 1781. -- AATA
