Abstract
A new method of counting individual 14C atoms in a sample by using an ultra-sensitive mass spectrometer is discussed. Advantages include elimination of cosmic ray background; higher counting rates; faster determinations; samples one thousand times smaller and therefore a greater range of materials which can be dated without significant alteration. Instrumentation and applications of this technique are presented.
