Abstract
Coal is considered in its role as an ethnographic material which has reportedly been found in Alaska, on the western coast of British Columbia and in parts of Germany. Characteristics of these artifacts are described with respect to rank. The treatment of this material is discussed in terms of the effect to various organic solvents and consolidating agents. -- AATA
