Abstract
Schweinfurt Green has been produced as a pigment since 1814. It ws sold under many different trade names because it is extremely poisonous. There are many confusions of names and products of Schweinfurt Green and similar pigments of the 19th century in publication on pigments. Schweinfurt Green is produced by a reaction of solutions of verdigris and arsenic from which the green compound crystallizes. There are many variations of the manufacturing process, since as well the components as the conditions of reaction can be modified. Schweinfurt Green was not only used for painting, but also as a dyestuff for textiles and as a very efficient insecticide. In spite of a prohibition to use it in watersoluble mediums, Schweinfurt Green was produced until recently as an oil colour.
