The cleaning and lighting projects were undertaken at Grand Central Station, New York City, to preserve the architectural integrity of the structure. The lighting system also had to provide lighting equivalent to that which had originally been intended, the primary source of which was solar illumination through the skylights. Other criteria for the system were that it had to be unobtrusive, energy efficient, and easy to maintain. An analysis of the existing lighting was the first step of the project. Special luminaires were designed to maintain appropriate color spectrum and to be energy efficient. The placement of the fixtures to maintain visual and power efficiency is also indicated.
