Considers problems involved in examining and documenting the wall paintings of Schloß Seehof, Bamberg, Germany. The investigation was undertaken to ascertain the condition of the paintings and to conduct preliminary consolidation work. Documentation techniques includes photodocumentation of the medium, a greying paint layers, embritled wax gilding; most of the damage had been caused by moisture penetration. Other parameter examined were the painting technique and as evaluation of previous interventions. Preliminary, consolidation entailed securing peeling paint layers with temperature facings of Japanese paper and methylcellulose. Concludes that documentation should not be an end in itself, but that it should serve the end of preserving the work of art.
