Abstract
Seven deacidification methods were considered, based on a survey of the literature. The methods eliminated are briefly described. The seven methods were tested and evaluated after treatment and again after artificial aging. The solubility of inks and colors and problems of toxicity were considered. As a result, six methods, three aqueous and three nonaqueous, are recommended for use. Their preparation and methods of use are clearly described. The methods are calcium hydroxide, magnesium bicarbonate, borax, barium hydroxide, and methyl magnesium carbonate (by immersion and by spraying).
