The properties expected of a synthetic resin for textile conservation are listed, namely longterm flexibility, resistance to yellowing and aging, absence of harmful decomposition products, good solubility after aging and inability to accelerate the deterioration of fibers or dyes. Case histories where poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions were used as adhesives (up to 30 years ago) are described, and the extent to which these aging materials now meet the required properties is discussed. In some cases, poor display or storage conditions have increased the damage caused by unsuitable adhesives, and the treatments are not now fully reversible. The future storage of the object as well as its history, should influence the choice among treatment with adhesives, stitching, or no treatment at all. See 19-1053. -- AATA
