Abstract
Methods for the identification of acetate, acrylic, anidex, aramid, asbestos, cotton, cuprammonium rayon, flax, fluorocarbon, glass, hemp, jute, modacrylic, novoloid, nylon, nytril, polyolefin, polycarbonate, polyester, ramie, viscose rayon, saran, silk, spandex, triacetate, vinal, vinyon, and wool fibers are covered in ASTM standard D 276-80 (revision of D 276-77). Emphasis is placed on infrared spectroscopy, particularly for identifying man-made fibers. Methods for determining several physical properties (density, melting point, refractive index, birefringence, and regain) and solubility data useful for confirming infrared spectral data are included. Attention is drawn to the need for microscopic examination of the longitudinal and cross-sections of plant and animal fibers in order to distinguish species. -- AATA
