The ship's figurehead Peace, carved by William Rush, was recently restored by Wendy Stayman at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1958 the sculpture was purchased from an estate where it had been kept as a garden ornament; fumigation for carpenter ants was immediately necessary. The owners attempted to document the figure. They were instructed to remove the paint by a Rush authority; after verifying sculptor, Henri Marceau told them to stabilize decay with carnauba wax. Not until 1981 was a complete restoration of the statue undertaken: the procedures taken are briefly described. -- AATA
