Abstract
During recent cleaning of the painting (National Gallery No. 1680), a complete x-radiograph was made, and samples of the paint and ground were taken for examination as cross-sections. In addition to the two heads, one above the other, revealed in the x-rays, the sections suggest the presence of another image, sandwiched between them. All three figures were thought to have been painted by the same artist.
