One result of a recommendation issued at the December 1980 ICOM meeting on the safeguarding of the cultural heritage of the Pacific Region was this survey of federal and territorial legislation. The Pacific Region can be broken down into 37 jurisdictions. The authors provide a list of legislation by jurisdiction, a list of international conventions (and the states adhering to them), and a list of UNESCO recommendations. However, the major portion of the report is devoted to definitions of the categories of cultural and natural heritage (monuments, sites, fixed natural heritage, relics, property of artistic interest), and an annotated list of legislation by type of material protected.
