Abstract
Oxidation of polymers under ultraviolet irradiation is studied. The depth of deterioration is directly correlated to the square root of exposure time. Theoretical results are compared with experimental data. Main points of the model are: only activated molecules react with oxygen; they do not migrate; deterioration varies with time and depth; degree of alteration is controlled by the change of infrared absorption spectra on surface; deteriorated layer do not contribute to flexual strength.
