Abstract
Describes the restored house in Lutry, Switzerland, a city that has retained its medieval character. The house is remarkable because of its age (13th century), its integration into the urban fabric, the quality of architecture, and the unique characteristics of its inner distribution. At the turn of this century, a passage for vehicles was driven through the ground floor, destroying half the building. Left unoccupied since that time, it was in danger of falling down and about to be condemned to be demolished when the decision was reached to safeguard it. On the basis of this restoration, it may be concluded that in spite of the very serious state of degradation which a house may have reached, its restoration proves to be less expensive than a demolition and subsequent construction of a new house; and that it is quite possible to bring such a house back to life without destroying its inner structure or making windows on the facades or openings in the roofs. In such a way, a genuine witness of the past can be handed down to future generations.
