Abstract
Scientific eaxamination were carried out during conservation treatment of objects from 1st C.A.D. Burial-jar tumuli at the Mine site in Fukuoka prefecture (Japan). The glass objects were shown to be made at about the same time using glass materials brought from China. Two bronze mirrors were of typical Han-type bronze, containing lead from northern China. The patina on the bronze mirror contained less then 1% chlorine, and although basic copper chloride had been detected by XRD, it was not a main component, nor responsible for the bronze disease in this case. The bronze objects were cleaned, desalted, stabilized with benzotriazole and impregnated with incralac. Reassembly was carried out using alpha cyanoacrylate and epoxy resin adhesive. Iron objects were cleaned, desalted, stabilized with organo-functional silane, impregnated with Primal MV 1 then reassembled using nitrocellulose adhesives.
