Until the 11th century most wooden buildings in Japan were made from hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtua Endl.) wood. From the twelfth century onwards many other species were employed. The author had examinated 580 examples of wooden buildings from the 12th to the 19th centuries in order to study the relationship between the wood species selected and its function in the building itself. The results are tabulated.
