Abstract
'Lead white' pigment on 8th -- 15th century Japanese paintings in the Freer Gallery of Art is predominantly basic lead chloride rather than basic lead carbonate used in analogous Korean and Chinese pigments. Previous analyses and documentary evidence suggested that the basic lead chloride was a domestic Japanese product. Lead-isotope ratios were determined for a representative series of Japanese basic lead chlorides, Japanese basic lead carbonates, and Chinese and Korean basic lead carbonates in order to establish whether the different lead product pertained to different geographic sources. The results confirm the prevalence of basic lead chloride as the white pigment on Japanese paintings and provide additional support for the suggestion that basic lead chloride was used as a pigment and is not present as a result of chemical change. Lead-isotope ratios for the basic lead chlorides demonstrate that they pertain to a restricted zone within the Japanese ore region. Basic lead carbonates in 13th -- 14th century Japanese painting probably came mostly from Japan rather than the East Asian mainland as well.
