Abstract
The pigment chinese White (zinc oxide) is discussed. Its photoactinic ability is linked with industrial and conservation applications. Experimental work has demonstred that used as a watercolour pigment it is able to produce hydrogen peroxide when exposed to light. It is suggested that this could be responsible for the alterations (darkening on the reverse, discolouration around the edges) noticed on paper. B/W photographs, references.
