Abstract
Reprint of an article previously published in WAAC: Western Association for Art Conservation, Vol. 10, No. 2, pp. 2-5, 1988, with chart pp. 13-14. Provides a brief step-by-step guideline for dealing with a water-related disaster in an archival facility from the designation of a recovery director and disaster team through the removal of the damaged materials from their shelves and storage units. These guidelines are supplemented with guidelines for handling and packing specific types of materials including paper, books, floppy disks, sound recordings, photographic materials, videorecordings, microforms, parchment, and vellum, and basic salvage techniques for each type of material. A table summarizes the material.
