A brief survey of rubber history and general properties is followed by a detailed discussion of rubber degradation and the six different types of ageing process which can occur. Preventive methods are discussed with reference to storage conditions and chemical treatments (antioxidants). Finally the condition of items in the British museum ethnographical collection are considered. 11 references.
