Features of polymers which determine their mechanical properties are identified. Problems in the assessment of polymer degradation potential are discussed. Mechanisms by which changes in molecular size of polymers, by either fission or formation of chemical bonds are reviewed. Chemical and biological factors and mechanism stress are discussed. It is rare that only one factor is involved in deterioration. 6 references.
