Abstract
Samples taken from the bronze group The triumph of the Republic, by J. Dalou, Paris, (created for the centenary, restored for the bicentenary) showed the presence of sulphates, chlorides, oxides, carbonates whose mineral compositions are tabulated. Sand blasting revealed the deterioration to have two causes: the original construction or casting and later physical damage, deformation, corrosion or previous restorations. For the restoration, large cracks were cleaned out down to healthy metal, then infilled by argon soldering with an alloy close to the original. Losses were replaced with bronze, laminated or cast, soldered under argon. Original joints were reinforced and small cracks and scratches were rubbed down. Inside, the iron structure originally intended as support for the group was found to be severely corroded and not longer supportive. It was left as such. The surface was treated to recreate the overall patina. Diagrams, tables, B/W photographs.
