When performing arts organizations decide to deposit their collections in a repository (library, historical society, etc.), there should be clear guidelines for both sides. For example, access: a repository will need to have some benefit, i.e. Use, so material cannot all be placed on restricted access. If some sensitive items must be restricted, then free access to the rest of the collection should be allowed. Other issues: what public use can be made of the collection - i.e. Exhibitions publications, etc.? are other similar collections being stored in the same place? will more of the same type be sought? the organisation would be well advised to consider different possibilities before deciding on the final repository. -- ICCROM
