The theatre collection of the free library, philadelphia, contains books, magazines, program, posters, etc. Related to theatre, circus, vaudeville, motion pictures, television and radio. Modest preservation was in operation but it was decided to commission a 2-day survey. The first questions concerned the scope of the collection, who and how many used it. The actual survey followed. The 25-page report gave suggestions on environment proper storage and specific information on individual items. As treatment would be expensive, the emphasis had to be put on preservation. The biggest problem was newspaper clippings: 60 file cabinets. Certain significant subject categories were chosen for preservation treatment. Nothing will be added that has not been treated, then slowly this core material will be expanded to include other material. -- ICCROM
