Abstract

In attempting to date the Custom House quays, Fletcher was using timbers with short ring sequences and no sapwood. Data are presented to illustrate the insecurity of such a procedure. Only if a structure has many timbers is a date accurate to 15-20 years attainable in the absence of bark surfaces. -- AATA
