Abstract
An overview of the developments in library and archive conservation during the last 15 years, and a general guide to conservation management and preventive conservation, as well as predictions for the future of library conservation. The history of the library conservation movement, work by major conservation programs like the Center for the Book (Library of Congress), the New England Document Conservation Center, preventive management measures and disaster recovery plans, and various types of in-house conservation treatments are discussed. There are lists of research centers and professional associations and of suppliers of materials, as well as patterns for protective boxes and wrappers, instructions for polyester film encapsulation, and a bibliography with 5871 English-language citations. Throughout their work, the authors stress cooperative programs and actions. See also AATA 9-572.
