In his introduction to the 1979 congress on the restoration of book paintings and inks (held in Bremen), Busley reviews the St. Gallen conference of 1898 -- which dealt with the same question -- and discusses the destructive components of ink. He believes that until more analysis is done and the exact causes of ink damage are pinpointed, treatments should not be undertaken.
