Abstract
The Legislative Library at Fredericton, New Brunswick, purchased Audubon's Birds of America in 1852; in 1978-1979 Volume I was given a conservation treatment. Alum, used in the manufacture of the paper, contributed to the high acid content of the prints. The grain direction of the paper-did not lie perpendicular to the binding; consequently the pages could not arch when tumed and tended to break along the gutter. There was color transfer from some of the paintings to the back of the preceding leaf. The gold tooling and the leather board, however, were in good condition except for a little flaking. The treatment procedure and the storage method for protecting both the prints and the binding are described. See also 20-1544. -- AATA
