Considers production, identification methods, main uses, faults and defects in book cloths since their introduction in 1823. Suggestions for conservation are being sought and both conservators and librarians are urged to consider books bound with woven fabrics and marbled, silk-screen-processed and polychromatically printed book cloths as valuable examples in the history of the development of binding materials.
