Reports the initial steps of a research project being undertaken (1990) under the direction of Derek Priest at the Paper Science Department of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. The project aims to establish the theory and practical principles for a method of determining nondestructively the mechanical properties of paper in a book. A sensor combined with portable computer could be developed to obtain a profile of the condition of a large number of books as an aid in selecting appropriate conservation strategies.
