Takakazu Maruyasu of the Science University of Tokyo has undertaken a long-term photogrammetric survey and evaluation of many of Japan's most valuable ancient Buddhist statues. The photogrammetric procedure is described, and the equipment identified. The orthographic projections have permitted new insight into the artistic techniques used in producing these sculptures and information for use in reconstructing and restoring these cultural properties. In the two statues examined, most of the extant material was shown to be 13th- and 17th-century reconstruction; with this program, the original design of the sculptures can be reconstructed.
