Abstract
Upgrading bridges in an effort to improve traffic flow has resulted in much unnecessary damage to historic bridges. A better option would be to conserve them appropriately and forbid their use by unsuitable traffic examples countrywide are cited to show that barring heavy vehicles from short cuts which use historic bridges would have a generally beneficial effect on the community. The Department of Transport and English Heritage should set up an inquiry into the matter.
