Most of the bronzes removed from Africa have been given a superficial cleaning and then waxed. Recently, six Benin bronze belt masks were closely examined at the conservation laboratory of the Detroit Institute of Art. All were found to be in need of treatment. History of the objects, examination and cleaning are discussed. Conclusions are drawn concerning proper curatorial care of African bronzes.
