Abstract
A study of the deterioration of stone where a hardened outer skin is formed under which the stone to crumble. Decay results from the conversion of calcium carbonate to gypsum. It affects especially the calcareous binder that holds the calcite crystals together. Sulphate ions in water are responsible for decay.
