Abstract
In retouching a painting, several different policies are available and may be used in appropriate cases. They are: normal retouching , total retouching (i.e., exact compensation); neutral retouching (i.e., no attempt to replace the desing); and tratteggio or rigatino (use of fine hatching). Some remarks on fragmentary works are added.
