Toners are used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of black and white photographs. The use of some toners can give enhanced image stability, while others have the reverse effects. In an attempt to discover more about these effects, photographic images treated with toners were examined by chemical analysis, x-ray fluorescence and scanning microscopy. The investigation was repeated after storage under accelerated ageing conditions. Details are given of the (Kodak) photographic materials, processing solutions and toners used. Accelerated ageing was 60c., 70%rh, 50klx illumination for 8/16 days, 5.4klx illumination (n.sky) for 30 days and 2 hydrogen peroxide-exposure tests. Silver intensity was measured by xrf.
