Abstract
Kodak spectroscopic plates, Type IIIa-J, have provided astronomers with a means of recording the presence and motion of stellar objects. It is essential that they be processed with care and it is equally important that they are properly stored. They must be protected from physical damage and prolonged exposure to high temperature and humidity, and shielded from atmospheric pollutants. The silver images on a few Kodak spectroscopic plates, Type IIIa-J, when subjected to emitters of peroxide vapors, have undergone a series of chemical reactions leading to microspot formation. Accelerated aging tests incorporating hydrogen peroxide have been used to duplicate microspot formation in the laboratory. A new processing sequence coupled with a postprocess treatment using Kodak rapid selenium toner gave excellent resistance to microspot formation. The use of Kodak hypo clearing agent to reduce washing time is less desirable than using the full recommended wash time. The recommended practice for storing plates is discussed.
