Very early in the history of photographic techniques the alteration of prints on salted paper posed a major problem. It is for this reason that we studied this process experimentally. Samples of paper impregnated with sodium chloride, potassium bichromate, sized with sugar or gelatine and toned with gold were artificially aged in various atmospheres. We were thus able to compare the effects of humidity, pollutant gasses (nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid), hydrogen peroxide, and light on four processes of salted paper, used with two different support papers. Finally, chemical treatments were applied to altered photographs in order to try to recover the original print. Three treatments were retained for their good visual results. We thus analyzed their behavior relative to the support papers. The results should nevertheless be considered to be still in the experimental stages. See also AATA 18-1748. -- AATA
