The use of copper in precolonial Africa was part of a language of materials expressing values and beliefs integral to the culture. The three sections of the book deal with copper's place in traditional African society as well as with copper resources and copper metallurgy, and include a survey of prehistoric copper mines in sub-Saharan Africa and discussions of mining and smelting processes, techniques of smithing, casting, and alloying. -- AATA
